Sofia is rather charming
The million-plus city and capital of the country, Sofia, sits at the foot of Mount Vitosha, which forms the southern edge of the Sofia Valley. Roughly 50 km north of the city lies one of the most beautiful spots in western Bulgaria: Golyam Kom. Sitting at an altitude of 2,016 metres above sea level, Golyam Kom rises as one of the highest points in the Western Balkan Mountains, with vast open meadows of bottle-green grass in summer and alpine slopes in the winter months.
Travelling further into the country and heading east, you reach Plovdiv, the country’s second-largest city. Known as the “eternal city of Bulgaria”, it is considered one of Europe’s oldest cities and is a cultural stronghold not only for Bulgaria but for Europe as a whole.

Here you can, among other things, experience Tsar Simeon’s Garden with the Singing Fountain, which is the focal point of the music and light shows held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening at 21:30. Continuing east from Plovdiv and following the Balkan Mountains, you eventually arrive at the Black Sea, which provides the backdrop for countless youth holidays to the legendary Sunny Beach.
With only a few permanent residents, the town comes alive mainly in summer, when several thousand people flock there to enjoy the mild waves of the Black Sea and the many hotels lining the main street that runs along the beach. In this way, Bulgaria offers breathtaking experiences from east to west for city dwellers, mountain hikers and beach holidaymakers alike.
