The Azores, nine fantastic islands in the middle of the Atlantic with the mildest climate
The Azores archipelago, or Açores in Portuguese, is a Portuguese island group in the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 1,500 km from Lisbon and about 3,900 km from the east coast of North America. The region is an autonomous region under Portugal. The nine islands that make up the Azores are spread across an area more than 600 km in diameter. All of the islands are of volcanic origin. The highest point of the islands, the volcano Montanha do Pico at 2,351 m, is also the highest mountain in Portugal.
The Portuguese island group consists of nine islands: São Miguel, Terceira, Santa Maria, Faial, Pico, Graciosa, São Jorge, Flores and Corvo. The largest town is Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, with around 28,000 inhabitants. There are four other larger towns: Ribeira Grande on São Miguel, Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória on Terceira, and Horta on Faial. The nine islands have a combined population of around 245,000.
The main industries are agriculture, cattle farming, fishing and tourism.
